Final Report-Resource Efficient & Cleaner Production in the Iron & Steel
This assessment, conducted under the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) and supported by UNIDO in collaboration with the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and other relevant ministries, examines opportunities to improve Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) in Indonesia’s iron and steel industry. The study aims to identify strategies to enhance resource efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen industrial competitiveness while supporting Indonesia’s Low Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI). Through surveys, data analysis, and pilot assessments, the study evaluated energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and material efficiency across selected companies in the sector.
The findings highlight that adopting RECP practices—such as optimizing energy use, improving water management, introducing cleaner technologies, and enhancing material efficiency—can significantly reduce environmental impacts while improving productivity and operational performance. The study also shows that while some companies have made progress in implementing sustainability measures, broader adoption across the sector is still needed. Strengthening policy support, industry awareness, and access to sustainable financing will be key to accelerating the transition toward low-carbon and circular steel production in Indonesia and supporting national climate and green economy objectives.
